FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets coach Robert Saleh is wavering on his commitment to Zach Wilson, setting up a possible quarterback change this week.
Three weeks after saying Wilson would be the starter for the remainder of the season, barring injury, Saleh was noncommittal Monday on whether the 2021 second overall pick will start Sunday against the Chicago Bears.
This marked the first hint of doubt from the organization about Wilson's status as the No. 1 quarterback.
"We're keeping everything on the table over the next couple of days," Saleh said.
Asked if he's prepared to name Wilson as this week's starter, he said, "Not right now, not until I'm done evaluating everything."
Wilson was informed of his status by the coaches, essentially leaving him in limbo.
Mike White is next on the depth chart, followed by Joe Flacco, who started the first three games as Wilson recovered from a preseason knee injury. Saleh didn't rule out either quarterback as a potential replacement.
Wilson is 5-2 as the starter, but he played poorly in two of the past three games -- both losses to the New England Patriots. He completed only nine of 22 passes for a career-low 77 yards in Sunday's 10-3 loss. Afterward, he showed little accountability with comments that went viral. Asked if he let down the defense, Wilson said simply, "No. No."
Some defensive players were upset by the remarks, sources said.
Clearly, Saleh wasn't happy by the way Wilson handled his postgame news conference.
"Is it a mistake? Sure," Saleh said. "Is it something he'll be better from? Absolutely."
He said Wilson needs to understand "it's our job to take the bullets and own it," adding, "I don't think it's indicative of how he feels about his team or his teammates."
Wilson's poor game was discussed in Monday's team meeting, a source said. Saleh said all performances -- good and bad -- are mentioned in team meetings.
At 6-4, the Jets are still in the playoff hunt, but they're not getting much production out of Wilson. He has only four touchdown passes, one fewer than Flacco, who hasn't played since Week 3.
Saleh emphasized that every position, not just quarterback, will be evaluated.
"When you put up 100 yards of offense [actually, 103], I don't care how good New England is -- and they are good -- it's unacceptable," Saleh said. "It's not NFL football."
A seething Saleh said after the game that the offensive performance in the second half (2 total yards) was "dog s---." Saleh said Monday he has no plans to replace the playcaller, offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur.
Wilson came under heavy criticism after throwing three interceptions Oct. 30 against the Patriots, but he responded nicely with a solid game in an upset of the Buffalo Bills.
But Sunday's performance was a big step backward. Receivers Garrett Wilson and Denzel Mims were clearly frustrated during the game, and Garrett Wilson ranted to reporters, calling the offense a "sorry" unit without mentioning Zach Wilson's name.
"I think we've got a championship-quality defense and I think we've got really good players on offense," Saleh said. "From a schematic standpoint, I think we're right there with everyone else. But I'm just trying to evaluate to see how we can get this offense going a little bit."
Wilson ranks 23rd in Total QBR (45.2) and 34th out of 34 qualified passers in completion percentage (55.6). Predictably, the three players made available to the media Monday expressed faith in Wilson. Asked his confidence level in Wilson, guard Laken Tomlinson said, "It's high. He's our quarterback. What do you mean?"

Sit that kid down and let him learn from the bench. He's nowhere near an NFL QB right now.

The Jets have a decent running game and a very good defense. They shouldn't be wasted on a QB whose calling card is hope.

Social media are crying for White to start.
How come White didn't start the 1st 4 or 5 games of the season?

New York Jets players were informed Wednesday morning in a team meeting that Zach Wilson is not starting Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The decision means either Mike White, who is second on the team's depth chart at quarterback, or veteran Joe Flacco will start the game.
Wilson went 5-2 as the Jets' starting quarterback this season. Those two losses came against the New England Patriots, when the Jets' offense scored just two touchdowns in the two games.
The Jets (6-4), hoping to end an 11-year playoff drought, have shifted into a win-now mode. They believe they have a championship-caliber defense and don't want to waste this opportunity because of erratic quarterback play.
Wilson passed for a career-low 77 yards in last week's loss to the New England Patriots and created a firestorm by refusing to take any blame for the dismal showing by the offense.
On Monday, Saleh met with Wilson and told him he was evaluating the quarterback position, later telling reporters the same thing. The non-endorsement was significant because it marked the first time Wilson's job security was called into question by the team.
Wilson, drafted second overall last year, missed the start of the 2022 season after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery following a preseason injury. Flacco started the first three games of the season and went 1-2.

Pissed somebody off. Maybe yelled at the coaches for not having a better plan vs the Patriots :)

Wow...that's a good move by Saleh imo. Hopefully, Wilson will learn from it.
It's interesting because Cleveland could've had Saleh and I think this is the kind of thing Baker Mayfield needed. It seems to me that Kevin Stefanski didn't have the guts to do what Saleh is doing and it ended up f*****g the whole team up. Not that the Browns wouldn't have found another way to jack things up.
